Being prepared

Recent months have seen the completion of a two-year initiative that is very dear to TRY: ensuring that our town is prepared for sustained outages and emergencies.

The significance of the Black Summer bushfires in 2019 and increasing storms and floods has not been lost on our town. Our Emergency Preparedness project looked at ways to provide backup energy options for key community facilities, to better prepare and insulate us against unexpected emergencies and disruptions. But it also looked at what social and administrative structures were needed to deploy those attributes when they are needed.

‘…when we have a significant event, our centre is hopefully a hub that allows people to stand up quicker.’

It has been a thrill to receive great funding and practical support from Emergency Recovery Victoria, and they have prepared this neat video of our continuing work to localise our power supply and provide extra resilience to our town. The focus is on implementing a diverse range of pathways to provide flexible and responsive back up power in readiness for crazy weather.

Following bushfires in 2018, a small Victorian town set its sights on being powered 100% by renewable energy. Through the process, Yackandandah is now better prepared for any future natural disaster – Emergency Recovery Victoria

Huge call out also to YCDCo (Yackandandah Community Development Company), Indigo Shire Council, Yackandandah Folk Festival, Yack Community Centre, Solar Integrity and Boschetti. Plus, a bunch of caring locals who shared their time and expertise!
